Old 97'sare an "alt-country" band originally based in Dallas, Texas. The group formed in 1993 and took their name from a song popularized by Johnny Cash, "Wreck of the Old '97." They describe themselves as a rock band with influences as varied as The Kinks, The Beatles, Pixies, David Bowie, Johnny Cash, and Merle Haggard. The band often performs country standards made famous by the latter two musicians, and has interspersed a number of these on their half-dozen albums over the last decade. Old 97's have been heralded as a great live band, although they claim to never rehearse their act. They included five live songs as a bonus disc on Satellite Rides, and released a live double CD set recorded at historic Gruene Hall in 2005, Alive and Wired.

Desperate Times Lyrics

Old 97's

Alternate chording
Last night i dreamt of you, abbie hoffman peddling your books,
I gave five bucks to you, the other kids just gave you dirty looks.
I said "i'm sorry it didn't work out quite the way you planned."
You said, "that's silly boy, the revolution is at hand."

And if you got a ten spot brother, i got a dime,
These are desperate, desperate times.

Last night i dreamt of you, pepe lopez strung out on a stage,
It don't even look like you, smiling like sawed-off twenty gauge.
I still remember the telecaster down around your knees,
It's late november and i think i smell tequila on the breeze.

And if you got the cuervo honey, i got the lime,
These are desperate, desperate times.
And if you got the shotgun honey, i got the crime,
These are desperate, desperate times.
